On the Interstate system, the federal limits are 80,000 lb gross, 20,000 lb per single axle, and 34,000 lb per tandem axle group. Beyond those caps, the Federal Bridge Formula limits how much weight a group of axles can carry based on how far apart they are — which is exactly why more axles (tri, quad, super dump) legally carry more: spreading the load over a longer wheelbase raises the allowable weight.
States set their own limits on non-Interstate roads and issue overweight/oversize permits for heavier loads — annual, trip, or route-specific.
